Dr. Neil M. A. Hauenstein is a Senior Consultant at Performance Insight, LLC, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech, where he has been employed since 1988. As a member, and director, of the doctoral training program in Industrial-Organizational Psychology at Virginia Tech, Neil has mentored eighteen doctoral students.
Neil has worked on external consulting projects in both the private and public sectors including development and implementation of selection systems, performance appraisal / performance management systems, managerial assessment centers, external wage and salary surveys, compensation systems, exit interviews, and employee training and development. He is currently leading a multi-year project developing situational judgment tests to evaluate the effectiveness of the Department of Defense’s military equal opportunity / diversity training conducted at the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute located at Patrick Air Force Base.
Neil received his Ph.D. in industrial-organizational psychology from the University of Akron. He is a charter member of the American Psychological Society, and a member of the Society of Industrial-Organizational Psychology. Neil’s research has been recognized via awards presented by the American Psychological Association and the Academy of Management; a partial list of journals where he has published research includes the Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Human Performance, Leadership, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Making, Journal of Business Psychology, Organizational Research Methods, and Psychology Science. Neil is also an expert on research methods / design, psychometrics and statistics, with particular emphasis on measuring interrater agreement and measuring the accuracy of social perceptions.
Neil lives in Blacksburg with his wife, Roseanne, and his daughter Kara. Roseanne and Neil take every opportunity to visit their son, Matthew, who currently attends Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
